Retired nurse Sophie has transformed her home, Cottonwood, into a transitional house for people searching for a second chance. Veterans, addicts, trafficking survivors, cancer patients, and others carrying emotional scars find refuge within its walls, slowly rebuilding their lives through compassion, accountability, and a renewed sense of family.
But healing is never easy.
As outside forces threaten the sanctuary Sophie has created, the residents must confront the people, memories, and circumstances that refuse to let them move forward.
"Bring me your tired, your poor, your broken souls yearning to heal..."
Sophie's Rules is ultimately a story about hope, forgiveness, and the extraordinary strength found in ordinary people.
Award-winning actress, filmmaker, editor and producer Maritza Brikisak makes her directorial debut with Sophie's Rules, sharing directing duties with longtime friend and creative partner Christina Tsialtas.
Maritza also stars in the title role of Sophie, while serving as Executive Producer and Editor. Balancing work both in front of and behind the camera, she helped guide the project from script to screen, bringing together a cast and crew united by a shared passion for independent filmmaking.
Canadian filmmaker Christina Tsialtas makes her directorial debut with Sophie's Rules. After years of writing and developing stories, she embraced directing as a natural extension of her love for storytelling and working with actors.
Christina and Maritza met through acting classes in Toronto and remained close friends for many years, often discussing the dream of creating a film together. Sophie's Rules became the realization of that dream.

Sophie's Rules was produced during one of the most challenging periods in recent filmmaking. With production rules changing almost daily, the team adapted at every turn. Instead of fighting the limitations, they embraced them—using handheld cinematography, practical locations, and portable Quasar Science lighting with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K to create an intimate, documentary-inspired visual style.
Even meals became part of the story. With craft services unavailable during the lockdowns, everyone ordered individually through Uber Eats, turning lunch into a surprisingly personal moment and one of the many ways the production found creative solutions while keeping everyone safe.
Sophie's Rules marked the directorial debut of longtime friends Maritza Brikisak and Christina Tsialtas, who first met while studying acting in Toronto. They had dreamed of making a film together for many years before finally bringing Sophie's Rules to life.
Christina passed away on December 4, 2025. This film remains a celebration of her talent, friendship, and unwavering spirit.
Like the residents of Cottonwood, the production itself became a family.
When background performers were unavailable because of COVID restrictions, cast and crew stepped in to fill scenes whenever possible. Numerous companies generously donated props and resources, helping bring the film to life through the spirit of independent filmmaking.
During filming, a family of deer unexpectedly wandered through one of the locations. The filmmakers loved the spontaneous moment so much that it became part of the finished film.
The film's tagline,
"Bring me your tired, your poor, your broken souls yearning to heal..."
was inspired by Emma Lazarus' famous words inscribed on the Statue of Liberty:
"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."
Christina Tsialtas had a remarkable gift for seeing possibilities where others saw uncertainty. Whether through her intuition, her kindness, or her unwavering belief in people, she touched many lives—including mine. I was fortunate to call her my best friend for over thirty years, my daughter's godmother, and my creative partner. Sophie's Rules fulfilled a dream we shared for many years. Every frame carries a little of her spirit.
